TODAY

New Kids on the Block, 98 Degrees, Boyz II Men.

Boy band crushes are a rite of passage for many teens; there's a whole generation who grew up in the late 1980s and early 1990s who swooned for classic groups like New Kids on the Block, 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men. With "The Package Tour," all three bands are hitting the road together this summer -- and on Friday they visited Rockefeller Plaza and TODAY to thrill grown fans and impress a whole new generation.

The groups aren't just close not just as musicians -- they're friends as well. As New Kids singer Donnie Wahlberg noted, Boyz II Men canceled a photo shoot to be able to join the New Kids in Boston for last night's Boston Strong concert at Boston's TD Garden.

"It's a mutual respect, a love for each other," said Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men. "It's no egos."

And the Boston Strong concert? "It was unlike anything we've ever done in our careers," said Wahlberg. "It was just overwhelming."

So what about trying to get into the act again after so long? For 98 Degrees' Nick Lachey, it's like riding a bike. "We definitely have grown up a little bit over the last 12 years, but when you get back together and you start singing together again it all falls back into place," he said.

And speaking of falling into place, all three bands got their time on the TODAY concert stage, with New Kids (Wahlberg, Danny Wood, Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre) kicking things off. Clad in white jackets, T-shirts and black pants (coordinated, like their dance moves), they did a medley of two of their biggest hits -- "Step By Step" from 1990 and "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" from 1988.

Later, 98 Degrees (Lachey, Justin Jeffre, Jeff Timmons, Drew Lachey) took the stage dressed like casual lounge singers, bow ties loose and collars open, and sang "The Hardest Thing," their No. 5 hit from 1999 -- a tune so catchy even TODAY's Natalie Morales could be spotted in the crowd singing along.

Boyz II Men (Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, Stockman) wrapped up the initial sets -- also in matching outfits, but mainly in white shirts with rolled-up sleeves -- and launched into "Motownphilly," their No. 3 hit from 1991, the song that regularly checks the band's name. They got the crowd to sing along -- even some of the New Kids could be spotted getting funky with the tune.

Later on, the New Kids returned for another tune, "Hangin' Tough," their breakthrough hit from 1988. Quite a morning for fans of all ages!

Calif. man suspected of painting crosswalk

(AP) ? A Northern California man is facing vandalism charges after authorities say he painted a crosswalk on a street, allegedly telling officials it was needed.

Fifty-two-year-old Anthony Cardenas was arrested Thursday morning in Vallejo and booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of felony vandalism. Solano County Sheriff's Lt. Brad DeWall says workers spotted Cardenas committing the vandalism at a city intersection.

The intersection already has three crosswalks.

DeWall says Cardenas also painted lines through those.

State transportation workers painted over Cardenas' alleged crosswalk later in the day. A police cadet had been posted at the intersection until then to keep pedestrians from using it.

Cardenas remained behind bars Friday on $15,000 bail. Dewall says he did not have an attorney.

New mathematical model links space-time theories

May 30, 2013 ? Researchers at the University of Southampton have taken a significant step in a project to unravel the secrets of the structure of our Universe.

Professor Kostas Skenderis, Chair in Mathematical Physics at the University, comments: "One of the main recent advances in theoretical physics is the holographic principle. According to this idea, our Universe may be thought of as a hologram and we would like to understand how to formulate the laws of physics for such a holographic Universe."

A new paper released by Professor Skenderis and Dr Marco Caldarelli from the University of Southampton, Dr Joan Camps from the University of Cambridge and Dr Blaise Gout?raux from the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, Sweden published in the Rapid Communication section of 'Physical Review D', makes connections between negatively curved space-time and flat space-time.

Space-time is usually understood to describe space existing in three dimensions, with time playing the role of a fourth dimension and all four coming together to form a continuum, or a state in which the four elements can't be distinguished from each other.

Flat space-time and negative space-time describe an environment in which the Universe is non-compact, with space extending infinitely, forever in time, in any direction. The gravitational forces, such as the ones produced by a star, are best described by flat-space time. Negatively curved space-time describes a Universe filled with negative vacuum energy. The mathematics of holography is best understood for negatively curved space-times.

Professor Skenderis has developed a mathematic model which finds striking similarities between flat space-time and negatively curved space-time, with the latter however formulated in a negative number of dimensions, beyond our realm of physical perception.

He comments: "According to holography, at a fundamental level the universe has one less dimension than we perceive in everyday life and is governed by laws similar to electromagnetism. The idea is similar to that of ordinary holograms where a three-dimensional image is encoded in a two-dimensional surface, such as in the hologram on a credit card, but now it is the entire Universe that is encoded in such a fashion.

"Our research is ongoing, and we hope to find more connections between flat space-time, negatively curved space-time and holography. Traditional theories about how the Universe operates go some way individually to describing its very nature, but each fall short in different areas. It is our ultimate goal to find a new combined understanding of the Universe, which works across the board."

The paper AdS/Ricci-flat correspondence and the Gregory-Laflamme instability specifically explains what is known as the Gregory Laflamme instability, where certain types of black hole break up into smaller black holes when disturbed -- rather like a thin stream of water breaking into little droplets when you touch it with your finger. This black hole phenomenon has previously been shown to exist through computer simulations and this work provides a deeper theoretical explanation.

In October 2012, Professor Skenderis was named among 20 other prominent scientists around the world to receive an award from the New Frontiers in Astronomy and Cosmology international grant competition. He received $175,000 to explore the question, 'Was there a beginning of time and space?''.

Advice on short sale process. (we are buyers) - Zillow Real Estate ...

Hi there. ?I feel your pain. ?And like so many buyers who are purchasing a short-sale, unfortunately there is nothing "short" about it. ?I had a foreclosure take 8 MONTHS due to a roof replacement, open pool permit that had to be dealt with, and they claimed prior termite damage that had to be repaired. ?And that wasnt even a SHORT-SALE!! ?It was certainly the longest deal I've ever had! ?But we got it done eventually.

In some cases, the HOA will negotiate a portion of their fees as well as some interest and potentially a portion of attorneys' fees. ?This part is a case by case depending on how much is owed and over what period of time.

Hope that helps somewhat? ?Good luck to you. ?Shayla Twit, Sarasota FL Realtor

Wall Street falls as bond yields hit high dividend stocks

By Caroline Valetkevitch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Wednesday as high-yielding dividend stocks lost some of their luster after recent gains in U.S. Treasury bond yields.

Benchmark Treasury yields overnight hit 2.235 percent - the highest in more than a year - and have risen since last week when Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke raised fears that the Fed would curb its bond-buying program sooner than most people expected.

Indexes made up of consumer staples, health care, telecommunications and utilities shares - S&P 500 sectors that include many stocks that pay high dividends - all slid more than 1 percent. Johnson & Johnson , down 2.2 percent at $85.65, was the biggest drag on the S&P 500.

"The recent rise in interest rates on the 10-year bond over the past few sessions has finally caught up with some of this year's market leaders," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist for RDM Financial in Westport, Connecticut, adding that investors were cashing in profits.

The defensive sectors have led the gains in this year's market rally as investors favored high-dividend stocks over fixed-income securities in a low interest-rate environment.

The spread between the S&P 500 dividend yield and the 10-year U.S. Treasury note's yield is at its narrowest in about a year. The S&P 500 dividend yield was about 2.39 percent near Wednesday's close.

Shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac dropped sharply in heavy volume, reversing sharp early gains. Shares of Fannie Mae plunged 28.9 percent to $2.90, with about 272 billion shares traded, while shares of Freddie Mac sank 30.4 percent to $2.61, with 119 billion shares traded.

Fund manager Bruce Berkowitz's Fairholme Capital Management is making a big bet on preferred shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, CNBC reported. Until Wednesday's pullback, Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's shares had risen for seven straight days.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> slid 106.59 points, or 0.69 percent, to close at 15,302.80. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dropped 11.70 points, or 0.70 percent, to finish at 1,648.36. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> fell 21.37 points, or 0.61 percent, to end at 3,467.52.

Both the S&P telecoms sector index <.splrcl> and the S&P utilities sector index <.splrcu> fell 1.5 percent. The S&P consumer staples index <.splrcs> tumbled 1.9 percent while the S&P health care index <.spxhc> declined 1.5 percent.

At the same time, the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond exchange-traded fund added 1.1 percent, bouncing back from a drop of 2.6 percent on Tuesday.

Loose monetary policies by central banks around the world have lifted stock markets, driving both the Dow and the S&P 500 to record highs this year.

The S&P 500 is up 15.6 percent from its close at the end of 2012.

Among the day's gainers, Smithfield Foods surged 28.4 percent to $33.35 after China's Shuanghui Group agreed to buy the company for $34 a share.

SLM Corp rose 2.2 percent to $23.48 after the student loan provider said it would split the company into two publicly traded entities. The company named John Remondi as its chief executive officer.

Volume was roughly 6.7 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, slightly above the average daily closing volume of about 6.4 billion this year.

Decliners outpaced advancers on the NYSE by a ratio of nearly 4 to 1. On the Nasdaq, about 17 stocks fell for every eight that rose.
