Advice on short sale process. (we are buyers) - Zillow Real Estate ...

Hi there. ?I feel your pain. ?And like so many buyers who are purchasing a short-sale, unfortunately there is nothing "short" about it. ?I had a foreclosure take 8 MONTHS due to a roof replacement, open pool permit that had to be dealt with, and they claimed prior termite damage that had to be repaired. ?And that wasnt even a SHORT-SALE!! ?It was certainly the longest deal I've ever had! ?But we got it done eventually.

In some cases, the HOA will negotiate a portion of their fees as well as some interest and potentially a portion of attorneys' fees. ?This part is a case by case depending on how much is owed and over what period of time.

Hope that helps somewhat? ?Good luck to you. ?Shayla Twit, Sarasota FL Realtor

Wall Street falls as bond yields hit high dividend stocks

By Caroline Valetkevitch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Wednesday as high-yielding dividend stocks lost some of their luster after recent gains in U.S. Treasury bond yields.

Benchmark Treasury yields overnight hit 2.235 percent - the highest in more than a year - and have risen since last week when Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke raised fears that the Fed would curb its bond-buying program sooner than most people expected.

Indexes made up of consumer staples, health care, telecommunications and utilities shares - S&P 500 sectors that include many stocks that pay high dividends - all slid more than 1 percent. Johnson & Johnson , down 2.2 percent at $85.65, was the biggest drag on the S&P 500.

"The recent rise in interest rates on the 10-year bond over the past few sessions has finally caught up with some of this year's market leaders," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist for RDM Financial in Westport, Connecticut, adding that investors were cashing in profits.

The defensive sectors have led the gains in this year's market rally as investors favored high-dividend stocks over fixed-income securities in a low interest-rate environment.

The spread between the S&P 500 dividend yield and the 10-year U.S. Treasury note's yield is at its narrowest in about a year. The S&P 500 dividend yield was about 2.39 percent near Wednesday's close.

Shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac dropped sharply in heavy volume, reversing sharp early gains. Shares of Fannie Mae plunged 28.9 percent to $2.90, with about 272 billion shares traded, while shares of Freddie Mac sank 30.4 percent to $2.61, with 119 billion shares traded.

Fund manager Bruce Berkowitz's Fairholme Capital Management is making a big bet on preferred shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, CNBC reported. Until Wednesday's pullback, Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's shares had risen for seven straight days.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> slid 106.59 points, or 0.69 percent, to close at 15,302.80. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dropped 11.70 points, or 0.70 percent, to finish at 1,648.36. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> fell 21.37 points, or 0.61 percent, to end at 3,467.52.

Both the S&P telecoms sector index <.splrcl> and the S&P utilities sector index <.splrcu> fell 1.5 percent. The S&P consumer staples index <.splrcs> tumbled 1.9 percent while the S&P health care index <.spxhc> declined 1.5 percent.

At the same time, the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond exchange-traded fund added 1.1 percent, bouncing back from a drop of 2.6 percent on Tuesday.

Loose monetary policies by central banks around the world have lifted stock markets, driving both the Dow and the S&P 500 to record highs this year.

The S&P 500 is up 15.6 percent from its close at the end of 2012.

Among the day's gainers, Smithfield Foods surged 28.4 percent to $33.35 after China's Shuanghui Group agreed to buy the company for $34 a share.

SLM Corp rose 2.2 percent to $23.48 after the student loan provider said it would split the company into two publicly traded entities. The company named John Remondi as its chief executive officer.

Volume was roughly 6.7 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, slightly above the average daily closing volume of about 6.4 billion this year.

Decliners outpaced advancers on the NYSE by a ratio of nearly 4 to 1. On the Nasdaq, about 17 stocks fell for every eight that rose.

The 360Hero Cameras Are All Shades of Mind Blowing 360? Awesome

If we can agree on one thing, let's agree on this: 360? videos are unbelievably awesome because they completely immerse you into the video itself. Actually, video isn't even the right word for them because 360? videos fully capture everything around you, below you and above you?they're a recording of real life.

But the problem has always been the amount of work, money and time to get 360? videos right. It just took too much. 360Heros wants to make it easier. Maybe even too easy. 360Heroes has created a camera stand that allows you to simply slip in GoPro cameras into the right spot so you can immediately capture life at 360?.

Typically, one camera has a viewing angle of 170?, if you combine more, you get a wider viewing angle. But even most 360? camera rigs right now don't capture in full 360?, they're limited to 120? vertically. With 360Heros 360 Plug-n-Play holders though, you get a full 360? horizontally and 180? horizontally. You see everything.

The 360Hero Cameras Are All Shades of Mind Blowing 360? Awesome

The 360Heros 360 Plug-n-Play holders are made from aircraft grade flexible nylon that house 6 different GoPro cameras to create the all-seeing eye. The stand has various mounting points for tripods and even tiny fish line holes to suspend the housing in the air (like with a drone). It's starting as a Kickstarter project right now. You can support them here.

360Heros gear was used to make the absolutely mind blowing Beck video we saw earlier this year (you should watch it) and can be used anywhere: sporting events, concerts, a day at the park with your kid, a beach day and so on. Just check out some of the sample footage they've shot here. It's amazing. [360Heros Kickstarter]

Please post the complete error message, exactly as they appear in your development environment.

Also where is the date2013 class defined?

    Lose the parentheses here:

date2013 x();

    That's prototyping a function named x that returns a date2013 object.

Motorola's next flagship phone is called Moto X, will be built in former Nokia plant in Texas

Motorola's next flagship phone is called Moto X, will be built in former Nokia plant in Texas

Outside of possible FCC filings, Motorola has largely been coy about just what its next major smartphone will be -- until now. The firm's Dennis Woodside just revealed at D11 that the new flagship will be called Moto X (previously rumored as the X Phone), and that it will be built in a Fort Worth, Texas factory that was once used to make Nokia phones. Woodside isn't giving away many details at this stage, although he teases that the smartphone will "know what you want to do before you do." Oh, and he has a Moto X in his pocket... not that he's about to show us anything just yet, of course. If you're curious about Woodside's actual quote, it's below:

"It'll be the first Motorola smartphone built in the United States. It'll be built in Texas -- we'll employ around 2,000 people. It's right outside of Fort Worth in a 500,000 square foot facility that was previously used to build Nokia phones."

Update: Woodside had two extra nuggets while on stage -- he mentioned that the Moto X will be "broadly distributed" across numerous carriers, a rarity for Motorola smartphones in recent years. Specifically, he noted: "The Moto X is going to be broadly distributed -- that's a first for Motorola in a number of years. The support of the carriers has been fantastic." In other words, this won't be a Nexus device, and you can count on some amount of skinning and bloatware to muddle things up. On the issue of battery life, Woodside said: "I'll save the details for later, but [the industry issue of] battery life is a huge problem. Motorola has some of the world's best engineers and systems designers who spend their lives on that problem. There are two processors in the device that creates a system that allows you to do such a thing." Two processors, you say? Fascinating!

Update 2: The Moto X should arrive in late summer. Also, a reminder: Motorola mentioned a shift toward stock Android coming later this year. While there isn't any guarantee that the Moto X will embrace that philosophy, it would be a fitting poster child.

(AP) ? New international sanctions aimed at thwarting North Korea's nuclear weapons program are having unintended consequences: halting money transfers by foreign humanitarian groups working to help those most in need and forcing some agencies to carry suitcases of cash in from outside.

At the same time, some restrictions are meant to sting the country's elite by crippling the import of luxury goods, such as yachts, fancy cars and jewelry. But they do not appear to be stopping the well-heeled from living large in the capital Pyongyang.

Much of the aid group difficulties are linked to the state-run Bank of China's decision earlier this month to follow Washington's lead and sever ties with the North's Foreign Trade Bank, the main money transfer route for most foreign organizations, U.N. agencies and embassies in Pyongyang. With that line cut, aid workers in North Korea say they are left with few other options to receive foreign currency for expenses including rent, bills and salaries for local staff.

The sanctions are not supposed to affect humanitarian aid, but six Pyongyang-based aid organizations headquartered in Europe issued a communique earlier this month spelling out their frustrations and calling the difficulties in transferring money to North Korea a "big problem." They warned that they may be forced to suspend their operations if they cannot find ways to access cash. A handful of American non-governmental organizations also work in North Korea, but they cycle in and out and do not maintain a permanent presence.

Gerhard Uhrmacher, program manager for German humanitarian aid organization Welthungerhilfe, said when recent bank transfers failed, he managed to keep projects running by routing 500,000 euros ($643,000) to Chinese or North Korean accounts in China to pay for building supplies and other goods.

He said Welthungerhilfe, which signed the communique and works on agriculture and rural development projects in North Korea, has some reserves in Pyongyang but must also resort to carrying cash into the country by hand.

"It doesn't give a good impression. We're trying to be transparent, to be open to all sides and now we're more or less forced to do something that doesn't really look very proper because people who carry a lot of cash are somehow suspect," said Uhrmacher who is based in Germany and has worked in North Korea for the past 10 years.

"Whatever you're doing, everybody looks at you very closely," he said. "That's why we don't like it because bank accounts are proper. Everybody can have a look at it and everybody can control it. Now we are forced to do something else."

Some analysts said aid groups were simply "collateral damage" and that they will find a way to work around the sanctions as they have been forced to do in other countries. Others said the poorest North Koreas would be hurt if some humanitarian groups have to pull out of the country. The aid groups work on a range of issues from food security to improving health and assisting with disabilities.

Aid groups "may not provide as much support as governments, but they have the ability to reach the deep corners of the impoverished North where people are in most need," said Woo Seongji, a professor of international relations at Kyung Hee University in Seoul. "Their help is both symbolic and substantial. It reaches kids, hospitals and food shelters that outside governments may not be able to support consistently because of political considerations."

The U.S. State Department said Wednesday it was aware of the concerns of humanitarian groups and was exploring ways to address them. But spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the onus was on North Korea to provide for its people and make alternative financial services available to international organizations.

"This is essentially on the plate of the North Korean government which has made the decision not to provide funding and the necessary aid to their own people, which is the reason why this (aid) is so necessary from the outside," spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters in Washington. "We are aware of the challenges. We want aid to make its way to the people of North Korea."

The latest sanctions have added challenges to the already difficult system of getting money into North Korea since ally China has restrictions on how much foreign currency can be legally taken beyond its borders.

Sanctions and trade embargoes have long been used by the international community to put an economic squeeze on troublesome regimes from Iraq and Myanmar to Cuba. But they are a blunt tool that can unintentionally add to the suffering of people living under oppressive rule by hindering development and the delivery of aid.

In North Korea's case, the sanctions are meant to stop financing and the smuggling of cash that could help its nuclear and missile programs. They also aim to send a message to the country's elite by crushing the import of luxury goods.

Yet last week at the newly opened six-story Haedanghwa Service Complex in Pyongyang, well-dressed North Koreans chatted on mobile phones and browsed in a high-end boutique that sold everything from fine Italian suits and Dior makeup to glass showcases glittering with diamonds and gold.

The opulent center boasted 17 different themed dining rooms and cavernous banquet halls, some with their own bathrooms and round tables big enough to seat 30 people. Upstairs, young couples played pool, lounged in the sauna and munched on sushi while sipping cans of Coke and beer. Others splashed in a heated indoor swimming pool replete with waterfalls or worked out at a fitness center filled with state-of-the-art equipment. Downstairs at a popular restaurant, a chef delighted guests by cooking on a grill in front of them ? at a cost of $50 a plate, not including drinks.

Meanwhile, at the airport, a Toshiba 42-inch flatscreen TV slowly made loops on the baggage carousel. All proof that high-end merchandise is still making its way to the upper class in an impoverished country where two-thirds of its 24 million people don't have enough to eat.

Uhrmacher said that despite repeated European Union vows that sanctions will not affect humanitarian aid, the pinch is being felt by all the organizations working in North Korea. The EU has not sanctioned Foreign Trade Bank, but he said due to U.S. political pressure and fears of becoming entangled in controversy, European banks do not want to be associated with it. Bank of China had typically been used as a channel to route money to the aid groups' North Korean accounts. Foreign embassies and NGOs can only have accounts with the FTB.

"We are concerned regarding possible unintended effects of certain sanctions, in particular with regard to humanitarian assistance, and stress the need to overcome these unintended effects," said Maja Kocijancic, spokeswoman for EU foreign policy head Catherine Ashton.

The U.S. Treasury Department hit the North Korean bank with sanctions in March, effectively cutting it off from the U.S. financial system after accusing the country's main foreign exchange institution of funding Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs. Washington pressured Beijing to also impose restrictions on the bank a month after new leader Kim Jong Un angered his biggest economic supporter by conducting an underground nuclear test.

The U.N. responded to that move by slapping Pyongyang with its toughest-ever sanctions. Tensions then boiled and North Korea spewed threats for weeks, including plans to launch nuclear strikes against the U.S. and its allies. The mood has since cooled, with the North sending a high-level envoy to Beijing last week to deliver a message that they were willing to take steps toward rejoining stalled nuclear disarmament talks.

Embassies and U.N. agencies are also affected by the banking transfer issues, but several officials refused to comment due to the sensitivity of the issue. However, the U.N. in Pyongyang said last month that the sanctions were hurting its ability to raise funds, resulting in a shortage of drugs and vaccines. The World Health Organization also said it's harder to import equipment and medicine because everyone has become over cautious at all levels before clearing materials.

The World Food Program said it has not yet been affected by the banking problems. It only needs limited funding within North Korea as financial transactions for its food aid are completed outside the country.

Instead of just getting the vowels and consonants right,?281 spellers from all 50 states and eight countries, gathered outside Washington, must also know the meaning of words like flibbertbibbet, weissnichtwo, and gobbledegook.

?When I first heard about it, I was thinking, ?It?s going to be a lot harder now,? ??competitor Alicia?Gonzales from Winchester, Va., told The Washington Times. ?Instead of just spelling the word, we have to know what it means.?

The computer-based vocabulary test counts for half of the speller?s overall score, with onstage tests, beginning Wednesday, to determine the other half of the score. Students are given 24 spelling words and 24 vocabulary words during Tuesday's preliminary round.?

The E.W. Scripps Company, which has sponsored the bee for 70 years, introduced the new vocabulary test last month. Bee director Paige Kimble told CNN the announcement was made after the regional spelling bees concluded.

?The timing of our announcement ... is absolutely fair," she said. "April is the first opportunity to engage all of the participants who have qualified for the national finals."

The new vocabulary component aims to help students "learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives," she said, in an April 9 announcement of the rule change.

Richard Morga, a Bee participant from Wood Dale, Ill., told the Chicago Tribune that he thinks the vocabulary test evens the playing field: ?The repeat (competitors) don?t really matter anymore,? he said.

Linda Tarrant, president of Hexco Academic, a company in Hunt, Texas, that provides personal coaching for elite spellers, told The Washington Times that the vocabulary change ?threw us all out of kilter.?

?I think they did it for all the right reasons, but I think it?s a terrible mistake to do it six weeks before the spelling bee,??Ms. Tarrant?said. ?You have kids who have been studying hard, two-to-four hours a day, since last year?s national bee. They have learned several thousand words, but have they learned the meaning of them all? My guess is no.?

Unemployment rates fall in nearly all US cities

(AP) ? Unemployment rates fell in almost all large U.S. cities in April, helped by stronger hiring. The gains show the job market is improving throughout the country.

The Labor Department said Wednesday that unemployment rates declined in 344 of the 372 largest metro areas. Rates rose in just 17 cities and were unchanged in 11.

The U.S. unemployment rate dropped in April to a four-year low of 7.5 percent, down from 7.6 percent in March. Employers have added an average of 208,000 jobs each month in the past six months. That's up from just 138,000 in the previous six.

The metro unemployment data aren't seasonally adjusted for trends like the hiring of summer employees in coastal cities. As a result, it can be more volatile than the national data.

For example, some of the biggest drops in April unemployment took place in coastal cities. The rate in Salinas, Calif., fell to 10 percent from 12.5 percent in March. In Ocean City, New Jersey, unemployment declined to 13.8 percent last month, from 17.1 percent in March. Both declines likely reflected a pickup in seasonal hiring.

Still, the broader trend across cities has improved in the past year. Overall, 48 cities had rates of less than 5 percent. That's up from 32 a year earlier. Only 26 cities had rates of 10 percent or higher, down from 41 in April 2012.

Midland, Texas, posted the nation's lowest rate, at 3 percent. It was followed by Iowa City, Iowa and Bismarck, N.D., both at 3.1 percent.

Yuma, Ariz. had the nation's highest rate, at 30.3 percent, followed by El Centro, Calif., with 24 percent. Both cities have long had the highest rates in the country. They are adjacent and have heavy populations of migrant farm workers.

    Reports: Kuwait oil minister resigns

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? Kuwait media say the Gulf nation's oil minister has resigned after criticism of a $2.2 billion compensation payment over a collapsed business deal.

There was no immediate official comment Sunday on the reported resignation of Hani Hussein, but he has faced calls to be questioned in parliament over the payment to Dow Chemical Co.

Some lawmakers have demanded an investigation into the settlement this month with Dow. The payment was for the 2008 withdrawal of Kuwait's state-run petrochemical company from a planned plastics joint venture.

The websites of several newspapers, including pro-government Al Watan, reported Hussein's resignation was accepted.

Kuwait is one of OPEC's top exporters, but the resignation is not expected to bring disruptions. Kuwait's oil policy is set by a special panel controlled by the ruling family.

Ireland considering reform of corporate tax system: paper

DUBLIN (Reuters) - The Irish government is examining options to close a loophole in its tax system that has allowed multinational companies to significantly reduce taxes they pay on profits, the Sunday Business Post newspaper reported.

Ireland has been criticized by British and U.S. legislators in recent weeks for the fact that multinationals like Apple and Google reduced their global tax bills by channeling profits through Irish subsidiaries.

The Sunday Business Post said Ireland's finance ministry was examining options to phase out the "Double Irish", a tax avoidance technique in which multinationals funnel profits through two linked Irish subsidiaries.

Google's international headquarters in Dublin made tax-deductible payments to a Bermudan subsidiary via a Dutch affiliate in a related arrangement known as a "Double Irish Dutch sandwich."

The Sunday Business Post did not detail what changes might be made to the Irish tax system.

A spokesman for Ireland's finance ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Irish government ministers have said the country's tax system is fair and transparent and that international efforts are needed to curb large scale tax avoidance by multinational companies.

Happiness Is an Inside Job - The Self Improvement Blog

    laughter3 285By A Horton ?

Is happiness something out there over which you exert no control at all? Can it be that happiness is something elusive and difficult to find or is it just that you just don?t know how easy it actually is to be happy. Could it be that you don?t accept that happiness is a choice, instead you believe that it is something, which is dependent on extrinsic factors, over which you exert no or very little control at all. Happiness is there for the taking, if you stop looking outside of yourself for meaning, fulfilment and joy. Anyone can be happy at any time, if they choose and allow themselves to be happy.

    Invite happiness into your experience

What does it take to get you into a state of happiness? Do factors outside of you dictate how happy you feel? Of course certain extrinsic factors do influence your state of happiness. My question is ?SHOULD THEY?. All we are ever exposed to throughout our lives are a number of different events. We then give these events meaning and based on the meaning we apportion to them, we either allow them to make us happy or sad. If happiness is a choice, should an event over which we have little or no control, dictate how we feel?

    Understand Happiness

Do not try to control everything in your life. One of the biggest happiness busters I see all the time, is caused by people not accepting that life is unpredictable and that challenges may arrive at any time. Yes of course you need a vision and goals for the future, but accept that things won?t always go exactly according to plan, challenges can and will come along at any time. They are an inevitable part of any success journey. Challenges are not always possible to predict and more often than not, they arrive when least expected. Should something you can?t predict or control, dictate how happy you feel?

As General Dwight D Eisenhower said after being asked about the importance of planning before the Normandy landings, He said ?Planning was crucial before the battle began, but once the first cannon were fired the plans were of little value at all.? Accept that your vision gives you direction and your goals give you guidance on what daily action to take and then life happens. The universe will throw you a few challenges along your path to success; I believe to sharpen you up, not to steal your joy and happiness.

Challenges are never a reason to be unhappy, if viewed properly, they offer you new perspective and even reveal opportunities, which may have remained hidden, had you not encountered the challenge in the first place. Challenges are not a reason to be unhappy; they are a reason to celebrate. Each one, which comes your way, is bringing you just one step closer to the meaning and fulfilment you desire.

    Take a Long-term Perspective

You cannot control your circumstances at a micro level, so don?t even try. Stop trying to control your circumstances at a micro level, expecting things to just go the way you want them to. Rather take a longer term view of your life. As Anthony Robbins said, ?We hugely overestimate all we can achieve in a year and massively underestimate, all we can achieve in a decade.? When you take a longer term perspective, it is far easier to see setbacks, challenges or roadblocks for what they really are. Short term issues, which when handled properly will just disappear in time. Allow your life to unfold within the broad constraints of your vision and goals,, take a longer term view of your life, accept that you can?t control everything and it will be far easier to invite happiness into your experience.

    Live for Legacy

If you truly want to invite happiness and meaning into your life, then stop being self-absorbed and start looking beyond yourself, towards helping others. When you focus your energy on a cause larger than yourself and you stop thinking only of self, your world opens up and you will begin to experience true happiness and joy. Live your life in such a way that other people?s lives are touched in a meaningful way and you will start feeling happiness, in ways you could never imagine. There is no greater happiness, than can be found by helping and supporting others to realise their potential.

    Develop Friendships

Yes happiness is an inside job, but when you have real and true friendships with people, who matter, being happy and content is far easier. Good friends are one of life?s real blessings and will support you to be happy. I have some incredible, caring friends, who I completely trust and admire. They most certainly help me to uncover my internal happiness and joy. Great relationships are a wonderful catalyst for happiness. Are you investing enough time into developing meaningful friendships? Time invested into building great friendships, is time well spent, as it provides one of the best support systems for your happiness.

Afghan police rescued aid workers trapped in siege

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Ten terrified international aid workers huddled inside a fortified room in Kabul for two hours during a Taliban attack until they were rescued by Afghan police, the aid group said Sunday. A NATO commander said the dramatic operation bodes well for the country's future without foreign forces.

An Afghan police officer and two civilians were killed. The top commander of the international military coalition said the relatively low number of casualties was a sign of how Afghan forces have "markedly improved" as they increasingly take over responsibility for protecting the country ahead of most foreign troops' withdrawal next year.

That militants were able to launch two attacks in the capital in a little over a week ? another car bomb killed six Americans and nine Afghan bystanders eight days before ? prove how fierce a fight Afghan forces face. Still, Maj. Gen Joseph Osterman, director of operations for the coalition, said he has seen "marked improvement" over previous years.

"This particular one was very impressive," he said.

Richard Danziger, chief of mission for the International Organization for Migration, thanked police for the rescue during Friday's Taliban assault with a car bomb and attackers wearing suicide bomb vests and wielding shoulder-fired grenade launchers. He also praised the group's armed Nepalese guards, five of whom were wounded.

"Both the police and our ... guards, they held their ground and fought for two hours until they found a time when they could grab our staff and take them out," Danziger said at a news conference with his deputy, Enira Krdzalic, who survived the siege.

All four of the attackers were killed. A six-year-old Afghan girl initially reported dead turned out to be among the 17 people wounded, Sediqqi said.

Four IOM staff were wounded, including one Italian woman who was badly burned by a grenade. Danziger said earlier police reports that one of the Nepalese guards died was not true.

Danziger, who was out of Afghanistan during Friday's siege, said he was "mystified" as to why IOM was targeted. Insurgent assaults on aid groups are relatively rare, though attacks have hit U.N. guest houses in the past. The IOM is a U.N.-affiliated agency assisting returning Afghan migrants as well as those displaced by fighting. Danziger said the staff would resume work Monday in temporary quarters.

The Taliban claimed it attacked CIA trainers for the Afghan security forces, but Danziger stressed that the group has no affiliation with the American spy agency.

When the car bomb slammed into the IOM's southeastern gate just after 4 p.m. on Friday, about 12 international staff and another dozen Afghans were inside along with the Nepalese guards, Danziger said.

The Afghan staff escaped through the main gate and took three international workers with them. Nine other staff, including Krdzalic, fled to a fortified "strong room" along with one foreigner working for the International Labor Organization.

"You can imagine it was a very confusing situation inside the strong room. Not to mention we had this one (badly burned) colleague of ours who they were desperately trying to keep out of going into shock," Danziger said.

He said it took Afghan police two hours to get to the strong room and get the staff out. "And then, of course, when there were knocks on the door, (those inside) had to be reassured that these were friendly knocks and not the terrorists."

Krdzalic, who is from Bosnia and Herzegovina, was still visibly shaken.

"I hope you all understand that it is still too early for me to go back over that time," she said.

She also thanked the Afghan police, saying without them, she might not be alive.

Kabul's police chief, Gen. Mohammad Ayoub Salangi, says he considers the operation a success.

"The enemy's goal was to take the lives of the IOM workers," Salangi said. "Fortunately they couldn't do it. Our forces went out there and stopped them."

Training Afghan military and police to take over security is essential to the withdrawal of more than 60,000 foreign forces remaining in Afghanistan nearly 12 years after toppling the Taliban's hard-line regime for sheltering al-Qaida's terrorist leadership. The start of the insurgents' spring fighting season last month is a crucial test for those forces, as U.S. military trainers pull back.

The coalition said its troops were not involved in the fighting Friday, though they provided medical support.

?Heavy but grateful heart? on Memorial Day

In the words of William Ray Fullmer: ?My nephew, Sgt. Derek Tillman Roberts, spilled his blood on the sands of??

The circumstances of their deaths are different. But the same words?"loyal," "honorable," "selfless," "smart" and "fearless"?surfaced again and again this week when family and friends remembered the American military service members close to them who sacrificed their lives for their country.

Yahoo News invited readers to mark Memorial Day by sharing their memories. Below are excerpts from their stories, which we published this week.

Charles Leon Gilliland (Photo courtesy of Deb Cooper)Tales of young bravery: Decades after Charles Leon Gilliland died in battle in Korea, his sister-in-law still feels guilty about his death.

Gilliland, just 17 when he was killed in 1951, had written her letters asking for bullets for his pistol. She didn?t send them, fearing it would land her in trouble. According to Deb Cooper, who shared her Uncle Charles? story, her mother never forgave herself when she learned that Gilliland?s last moments were spent fighting with a knife because he lacked ammunition.

Here, from Cooper, is more about Gilliland, the youngest Korean War Medal of Honor recipient:

Uncle Charles loved playing Army as a child and always owned a gun. At 16, he tried to join the Marines, but he was turned away due to his age. My grandparents allowed Charles to join the Army on May 25, 1950, his 17th birthday.

I did not realize how important Uncle Charles was to my family and our nation. I was born 10 years after his death, and I did not always understand his heroics. Now, there are reminders everywhere in north-central Arkansas where he was born and lived: Memorials at the Baxter County Court House, a bridge crossing in Yellville, and the National Guard Center in Harrison are just a few.

In 1997, the USNS Gilliland was dedicated in his name. His official memorial is in Hawaii.

My mother and my grandmother told me stories of his bravery when I was a child. He was a young soldier, in the Army less than a year, when he stayed behind to let his platoon retreat to safety. He was never seen again.

Peter Guenette (Photo courtesy of David Harland Rousseau)A soldier?s protective instincts: Peter Guenette, a specialist fourth class, served in Company D in the Army?s 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. On May 18, 1968, he was about to fly to Hawaii for some R&R when he was bumped from the flight by a higher-ranking soldier serving in the rear echelon. Instead of sunning himself on a tropical beach, he was again on the front lines.

David Harland Rousseau, whose father served with Guenette in Vietnam, shares his story:

The men of Company D were closing in on a suspected enemy base camp in Quan Tan Uyen. Heavy fire from entrenched North Vietnam Army regulars rained down on the Screaming Eagles.

Peter and three other soldiers took cover in a shell hole and returned fire. Suddenly, an enemy grenade rolled into the crater between the soldiers. Without hesitation, Peter shouted a warning and covered the grenade with his body. He died instantly, but his selfless actions saved the lives of three men.

Sp4c. Guenette posthumously received the Medal of Honor, which was presented to his wife, Susan, by President Richard Nixon in April 1970.

Peter had a protective instinct that revealed itself in all he did?right until the last full measure.

Left: the engagement photo of Ada Strausbaugh and Clarence Reed; right: Aunt Ada receives the Purple Heart for??

Honoring a long-lost uncle and soldier: Clarence Reed served in the U.S. Army in France during World War II and died on April 7, 1945, shortly before VE Day. His grandniece, Nannette Gilbert, didn't know she even had a great uncle Clarence until her great aunt, Ada Strausbaugh, passed away in 2011. Reed had been Ada's first husband, and while it wasn't a family secret that her great aunt was on her second marriage, Gilbert says, it was just something no one spoke of.

After her great aunt's death, Gilbert learned more about her great uncle Clarence:

Aunt Ada and Clarence were married on April 17, 1944, in Gallipolis, Ohio. Clarence, who was from Dexter, Ohio, joined the Army and was stationed in France during World War II. He didn't survive the war and died on April 7, 1945, less than a year after Ada and Clarence married.

They had no children together, and my aunt had no children in her second marriage. Since my grandmother was her closest relative, and my mother is already passed away, I inherited a large box of pictures and memorabilia after my aunt's death. Among those items, I found the marriage license, death notice, pictures and letters that Ada and Clarence mailed back and forth to each other as well as supporting documents for the Purple Heart that Clarence received posthumously and which was presented to Ada. She was buried with Clarence's Purple Heart.

It pains me to know that on Memorial Day almost 70 years after his death, I may be the only one left honoring his memory. I've tried to find distant relatives on his side of the family to no avail. So this year, and from now on, I will honor my Great Uncle Clarence Reed, who served his country and gave his life during World War II.

Cpl. Jennifer M. Parcell (Photo courtesy of V. Wync Yarber)

?You are loved and you are greatly missed?: During a deployment to Iraq as part of the Marines? Lioness Program, Cpl. Jennifer M. Parcell was killed by a female suicide bomber at a checkpoint in Anbar province on Feb. 7, 2007. She was just three weeks from returning to her base in Okinawa, Japan.

    V. Wync Yarber, a Marine who assigned Parcell to the detachment, remembers her:

She didn't cast an imposing shadow at about 115 pounds and around 5 foot 4 inches tall, but she was every bit that hard-nosed Marine that you hear about.

I can remember when I first laid eyes on Jennifer M. Parcell. I remarked to one of my colleagues, "Is this Bring Your Little Sister to Work Day?" She barely looked old enough to have enlisted.

However, I was to find out that she was tough and had the ability to raise the performance of the Marines, or whomever, she was around. She didn't back away from a challenge and didn't complain when things didn't go exactly as planned. Whenever she heard her fellow Marines complaining, she would often admonish them by saying, "You guys sound like a bunch of little girls! ... SUCK IT UP!"

Though there have been many memorials dedicated to Parcell, and I even wear a bracelet on my left wrist commemorating her, I would much rather have her present, here on this planet. She was only 20 when she was whisked away from us.

So here is to Cpl. Jennifer Marie Parcell. You are loved and you are greatly missed.

Spc. Charles Odums II (Photo courtesy of Joseph Estrada)

A promising young man: It was 4 a.m. on Memorial Day 2004 when Joseph Estrada, an Army physician assistant with the 1-8 Cavalry, learned that a bomb killed one of his medics, Spc. Charles Odums II, the night before. Odums, who was the battalion?s first fatality during its year-long tour, had saved another solder?s life just a week earlier.

Estrada, who saw Odums as a younger version of himself, remembers that Memorial Day:

Later that morning, many in the unit gathered in an eerie silence near the morgue to pay their respects. I stood alone, preferring to mourn in solitude. Others embraced, some consoled others and some discreetly wiped tears under dark sunglasses.

On cue, we formed a line between the morgue and the ambulance. Four medics entered the building to retrieve the stretcher carrying our fallen comrade. Someone called out commands as the litter bearers emerged with our friend's remains. Restrained sobs filled the air. With the ambulance loaded, we filed past its back doors, each pausing briefly for one last moment with our hero.

After the convoy had left, we huddled up once more as Sgt. Kortney Clemons led us in prayer. We eventually dispersed to spend a very somber, reflective Memorial Day remembering our departed brother.

I remember his asking me about children after learning that I had five; he was in a young marriage and "needed some tips." I remember discussing his future plans; he was a promising young man.

Spc. Odums gave my life new focus, new perspectives, and a new appreciation for the little things. Even his death gave new meaning to Memorial Day. On May 31, 2004, and on every subsequent Memorial Day, with a heavy but grateful heart, I cry for my fallen brothers and sisters, and I thank them.

Syrian opposition resumes tough talks on unity key to peace push

    By Khaled Yacoub Oweis

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Syria's opposition resumed talks on Saturday aimed at closing their fractious ranks, crucial to launching an international peace conference, and government forces pressed an onslaught on a rebel-held town to try to gain the upper hand in civil war.

Failure of the opposition to unite could weaken the hand of conference co-sponsors Russia and the United States in ending Syria's conflict, which has killed 80,000 people, threatens to spill across borders and whip up wider sectarian conflict.

The U.S. and Russian foreign ministers are to meet in Paris on Monday to discuss how to nudge Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the opposition into peace talks in Geneva the two world powers have jointly proposed.

As opposition leaders met, Assad's forces reinforced by Lebanese Hezbollah fighters unleashed heavy artillery and tank fire to try to wrest back more rebel terrain in the border town of Qusair on Saturday, sources on both sides said.

More than 22 people in opposition-held areas were killed by Saturday afternoon, most of them rebels, and dozens were wounded, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Assad's forces are believed to have seized about two-thirds of Qusair and largely surrounded the rebels. But the price was high and rebels insisted they were preventing further advances.

The insurgents see Qusair as a critical battle to preserve cross-border supply lines and deny Assad a victory they fear may give him the edge in the prospective peace talks next month.

Sources at the Syrian National Coalition, which began its third day of meetings in Istanbul on Saturday, said its main players had agreed to focus now on international demands for a broadening of the Islamist-dominated coalition.

Attempts to strike a grand bargain involving veteran liberal campaigner Michel Kilo and businessman Mustafa al-Sabbagh, Qatar's point man in the coalition, went nowhere in talks that stretched overnight, senior coalition sources said.

"We are back to square one," one of them told Reuters.

Concerned by the rising influence of Islamists in the rebel ranks, the United States has pressed the opposition coalition to resolve its divisions and bring more liberals into the fold.

The coalition will try again to admit some members of the Kilo bloc into the organization, which is controlled by the powerful Muslim Brotherhood and Sabbagh faction, possibly creating a third force in the coalition.

Saudi Arabia, the most powerful Arab adversary of Assad, has agreed to play a more active role in furthering the coalition cause, diplomats and coalition members said.

    CLASHING SAUDI, RUSSIAN PRIORITIES

Saudi Arabia, the sources said, will want to see the Geneva conference, which could convene in the next few weeks, put the exit of Assad at the top of the agenda.

But they said Russia, a longtime ally of Assad, wanted it to focus on a ceasefire although there is scant rapport between opposition politicians abroad and rebels inside Syria.

The inability of the coalition to alter its Islamist-dominated membership as demanded by its international backers and replace a leadership undermined by power struggles is playing into the hands of Assad who, according to Russia, is prepared to send representatives to the peace conference.

"The coalition risks undermining itself to the point that its backers may have to look quickly for an alternative with enough credibility on the ground to go to Geneva," a senior opposition source at the talks said.

Senior opposition figures said the coalition was likely to attend the conference, but doubted the meeting would yield any immediate deal for Assad to leave power - their central demand.

While the opposition remained riven by differences, the assault by Assad's forces and their Shi'ite Muslim Hezbollah allies on Qusair, a Sunni town near Lebanon over the past week, is evolving into a pivotal battle.

Qusair controls access to Syria's Mediterranean coast, the heartland of Assad's minority Alawite community, and the battle may prove a weighty test of his ability to withstand the revolt.

Assad is backed by Shi'ite Iran and Hezbollah against the mainly Sunni rebels supported by Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Hezbollah's intervention is hardening fears that the civil war will cross borders at the volatile heart of the Middle East.

"It is ironic that Lebanon's civil strife is playing itself out in Syria. The opposition remains without coherence and the regime is intent on taking back anything it promises with violence," said one diplomat.

The diplomat was referring to a deepening sectarian divide between Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims in Lebanon, where Syrian troops were present for 29 years, including for most of the Lebanese civil war that ended in 1990.
