Egypt police call on protesters to leave sit-in

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian police official called Saturday on supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi to abandon their protest sit-ins, saying it would pave the way for his Muslim Brotherhood to return to a normal role in the country's political process.

The nationally televised remarks by Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel-Latif came as authorities announced plans to break up the two main Cairo sit-ins by erecting cordons to prevent people from entering them.

Morsi's backers, including his Muslim Brotherhood group, have vowed to continue protesting until he's reinstated. He was ousted in a military coup July 3 after several days of protests by millions who took to the street to demand his ouster.

Abdel-Latif promised the protesters they would be able to leave without being arrested if they had not committed any crimes. He offered protection and safe passage to those willing to leave the two main camps ? a large one outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque in eastern Cairo and a smaller one near Cairo University's main campus in Giza.

"If you believe you are bringing victory to the Brotherhood, it is your safe and secure departure that will allow the Brotherhood to go back to its role in the political process," Abdel-Latif said.

He said that Islamist leaders at the sit-ins are controlling information and "brainwashing" the protesters into thinking the sit-ins are in defense of Islam.

The Interior Ministry said some of the sit-ins' organizers were involved in "killings, torture and abductions."

Last weekend, the Interior Ministry said 11 bodies were found near both protest sites, with some showing signs of torture.

The London-based rights group Amnesty International also said it had testimony of alleged killings and torture at the hands of Morsi supporters inside the sit-ins, including a witness who said he saw one man stabbed and another have his throat cut.

In a new allegation, Egypt's state news agency reported Saturday that a 25 year-old worker was detained and violently beaten at one of the sit-ins. It quoted a security official as saying that the young man was found late Friday near a military factory south of Cairo with severe bruises and injuries. He told police he was abducted two days ago by pro-Morsi protesters who were participating in a march after he criticized them.

There are fears of more bloodshed if the sit-ins are dispersed by force. Already more than 280 people have been killed in violence since Morsi's ouster. The bloodiest incident took place last week, when more than 80 pro-Morsi supporters were killed in clashes with police near the sit-in at Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque.

A ?frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and a four-year old grandson. The old man?s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.

The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather?s shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass often milk spilled on the tablecloth.

Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, ?What are you making?? Just as sweetly, the boy responded, ?Oh, I am making the bowl for you and mama to eat.? The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandfather?s hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

Children are remarkably perceptive. Their eyes ever observe, their ears ever listen, and their minds ever process the messages they absorb. If they see us patiently provide a happy home atmosphere for family members, they will imitate that attitude for the rest of their lives. Personal injury lawyers defend hospital adverts | PM Law Limited

The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers has defended placing adverts for compensation claims in hospitals.

The government has issued guidance to NHS trusts saying personal injury lawyer adverts ?should not be supported? and are ?unwelcome? in A&E departments and hospital wards.

According to a Sky News investigation, some hospitals are paid up to ?112,000 a year in return for allowing advertising, and some get information leaflets printed for free with adverts on the back.

Lawyers who advertise in hospitals are not doing anything illegal and?some of the long-term contracts were signed before government guidance was issued.

Deborah Evans, chief executive of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, has defended the practice.

She said: ?If you?ve been injured the chances are high that you are going to go to a hospital. So actually law firms advertising in hospitals are reaching out to the very people who need them the most.

?As long as the advertisements are informative and educational and offer advice and assistance and support, then that is exactly the place they should be.?

Last year, health minister Simon Burns told MPs: ?It is not acceptable for that sort of advertising in NHS hospitals. I would hope that any trusts behaving in that way immediately review their procedures.?

The investigation alleged some contracts include clauses which do not allow the legal firms to take action against the hospital carrying the adverts.

The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers said it was unaware of contracts with these clauses.?

The bookstore Pages on Kensington, which did not suffer damage, started an initiative in June in which it offered to sell books to customers at cost. In addition, the store made accounts for customers who lost books in the flooding to allow others to make donations. Customers were able to e-mail the store with titles they lost for Pages staff to try to locate and the store did not charging for shipping.

The store set a deadline of July 9 originally, but extended it to July 31, according to the store's Twitter account.

?I extended the deadline because after spending two weeks with the emergency clean-up of my parents? house I knew that people weren?t ready to sit down and think clearly about what they had lost, when they were still ripping out drywall,? Pages owner Simone Lee told the website Quill and Quire in mid-July.

Several publishers, including Anansi/Groundwood, Simon & Schuster, and others offered to help Pages on Kensington with the plan, selling books to the store at discounted prices. Some, like the University of Alberta Press and Coach House Books, gave the store free copies, while Penguin Random House Canada sold books at a 50 percent discount.

Other indie stores stepped forward to help bookstores affected in Calgary, including Galiano Island Books of Galiano Island and Ella Minnow Children?s Bookstore of Toronto, which split its sales for one day with damaged Calgary bookstore Owl?s Nest. Owl?s Nest later announced it would be assisting bookstore Pixie Hollow Books, where the entire inventory was wiped out. Owl's Nest donated funds received from other bookstores as well half of their own earnings for one day to Pixie Hollow.

Texas withdraws subpoena for tweets on new abortion law

DALLAS (Reuters) - The Texas Department of Public Safety said on Thursday it had withdrawn a subpoena for information from Twitter regarding two tweets about conservative Texas lawmakers, including Governor Rick Perry, and the passage of restrictive abortion regulations.

The department had sought information, documents and records related to the Twitter accounts of Denise Romano of Austin and Michael Mayer of New York in an investigation into their tweets between July 17 and 19, the day before and after Perry signed the abortion bill into law.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Tom Vinger confirmed in an email that the subpoena had been withdrawn and said the department "will continue to investigate potential threats against public officials."

The tweets were directed at Perry and other Texas lawmakers in response to the ban on abortions in the state after 20 weeks of pregnancy and to new regulations on abortion providers.

One of the tweets on July 18 posted by Romano said, "Should we execute Perry by lethal injection or stoning for all he's killed." That post was retweeted by Mayer.

Both Mayer and Romano received support from their followers on Twitter, who expressed dismay that social media comments could be construed as a threat.

"We are pleased," said Romano's attorney Michelle Kostun, who added that the matter concerning her client is closed.

"We commend Twitter on its commitment to protecting user information and content," she added.

Twitter spokesman Jim Prosser said the social media outlet would not "confirm or comment" on the subpoena.

Baylor College of Medicine receives sizable grant from Komen for cancer research

Baylor researchers received nearly $1 million in grant funding to advance breast cancer research.

Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston received $960,000 from Susan G. Komen for the Cure to advance breast cancer research.

Dr. Sao Jiralerspong, assistant professor in the Lester and Sue Breast Center at BCM, was awarded a $450,000 grant to explore the lab potential of metformin, a diabetes drug, to reduce the threat that ductal carcinoma in situ will spread and develop into a more invasive type of cancer.

Dr. Melissa Bondy, professor of pediatrics in hematology and oncology, received $225,000 in funding to test a new method for assessing breast cancer risk using copy number variation, or structural changes in the genome that result in deletion of genes, deletion of parts of them or extra copies of them.

Bondy will look at classifying risk into multiple groups.

Dr. Jeffrey Rosen, the C.C. Bell Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at BCM, received $225,000 to study the function of a tumor-suppressing gene in mammary gland development and breast cancer.

Dr. Bert O'Malley, professor and chair of molecular and cellular biology at BCM, was awarded $62,500 to study a particular protein's potential role in the progression of ductal carcinoma in situ from a non-invasive to invasive cancer.

NeNe Leakes was so hype over her recent wedding redux to Gregg Leakes last month, having a lavish ceremony in Atlanta that she posted photos from all over the Internet, blah blah. South Africa faces challenge of curbing inflation: Marcus

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The South African Reserve Bank is concerned about keeping inflation within its 3-6 percent target band and about pricey labour deals fanning inflationary pressure in Africa's largest economy, Governor Gill Marcus said on Wednesday.

Marcus also said reducing chronic unemployment was one of the country's most pressing policy objectives and South Africa needed to diversify beyond the mining sector that has traditionally accounted for about 4-6 percent of the economy.

Government data a day earlier showed unemployment was at 25.6 percent in the second quarter and about 4.7 million South African job seekers were without work, the highest figure in the survey's five-year history.

Marcus said South Africa has faced a jobs crisis for the better part of three decades and its effects would be around for years, partly because of structural challenges.

Labour strife in mining over the past year has slowed production of minerals for export and been a drag on growth. Mining houses have reached wage deals well above the 6 percent inflation rate to bring calm to the troubled sector.

Marcus said labour regulations have not lived up to expectations, with collective bargaining favouring large firms, at the expense of small and medium-sized firms that provide most jobs.

South Africa's labour laws have been ranked as some of the most restrictive in the world, making labour less competitive than other emerging markets.

The unemployment rate has been stuck at around 22-25 percent for more than a decade and is one of the biggest headaches for President Jacob Zuma's ruling African National Congress as the country heads into elections next year.

Farley leaves AACo - Agriculture - Agribusiness - General News ...

THE boss of Australian Agricultural Company (AACo) ? the country?s biggest corporate beef producer - has exited the position.

AACo this morning revealed current chief executive David Farley would cease employment with the company.

But in its announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange it offered little explanation as to the reason for his departure.

?David has done a very good job and we thank him for his considerable contribution to the company,? AACo chairman Donald McGauchie said in the statement.

A past boss of Colly Cotton in Australia and Calcot in the United States, Mr Farley had been chief executive of AACo since December 2009.

Mr McGauchie said Mr Farley?s skills had been essential to bring the company to where it was today but indicated the next CEO would require ?a different skill set? to lead its next stage of growth.

Chief financial officer Craig White has been appointed interim CEO while the company conducts an executive search that it says will be internal and external.

Mr White, the former CFO at Billabong International and a former financial director with Coca-Cola, has only been with AACo since April.

Construction of one of the largest abattoirs in northern Australia at Livingstone, south of Darwin, has reportedly caused some friction within the company.

Mr Farley announced in April this year AACo would pay for the $85 million abattoir being built near Darwin off its own balance sheet.

"AACo has had numerous discussions with potential joint-venture partners, but... AACo will only consider a joint venture if the partner brought strategic value to the project, such as logistics or distribution capability, on terms acceptable to AACo," Mr Farley said in a statement.

The lengthy staged process of building the abattoir is said to have frustrated some board members.

AACo has recently been selling some of its Queensland properties, in a move the company said is part of its strategy to refocus capital in Northern Australia, after announcing its March 2013 quarter profits were negatively affected by the cattle price slump.

The properties include Brighton Downs, a 420,000 hectare cattle station near Winton, and Adelong, a 5200ha dryland farming and grazing property at Comet.

While the announcement of a disappointing first-quarter earnings result in May cast a cloud over the company, attributable to a $43.2 million revaluation of its herd, AACo's share price performed strongly in the last week of June, increasing from $1.10 to close at $1.17. Trading was strong with the second highest weekly volume recorded in the last 12 months.

The share price then hovered between $1.18 and $1.27 through July.

The company was rebounding from close to a 12-month low after falling sharply from a high of $1.41 in February. Its share price this morning (July 31) sat at $1.20, little changed from recent days.
